The Gardena Jackpot

One popular draw poker game in the 1970s is the one called “Gardena Jackpot”. This game is named after the city of Gardena in California, where this particular draw poker variant became distinctly famous among poker players. The Gardena Jackpot’s popularity is second only to that of the California Lowball & best Online Casinos.

In 1970s, according to many historians of poker, the small city of Gardena, California has the greatest number of public poker tables throughout the United States. But at present, other cities, such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City, has overtaken Gardena in numbers. Yet, the industry of poker in this small city remains progressive.

To play the Gardena Jackpot, the same rules of draw poker are applied. That is, every poker player must play an ante and then each is dealt with a complete hand. Then, there is the first betting round, followed by the draw phase. In the draw phase, a poker player may replace some of his cards with the cards taken from the deck stub. After the draw phase, a second betting round is conducted.

However, betting rounds cannot begin as easily as in other draw poker variants. The player who may open the betting round is one which has a pair of Jacks or better. Thus, a poker player who has no pair of Jacks or better can only check. But when the betting round has been opened by one of the poker players, those other poker players who checked may call or raise the bet.

If none of the players have a pair of Jacks or better and the betting round is not opened, the dealer makes a new deal. With the new deal, all poker players make another ante. The antes are added to the same pot which contains the previous antes. If in this second deal the betting round remains unopened, the dealer makes the next deal and the poker players make a third ante. As a result, the pot size grows.

One peculiar characteristic of the Gardena Jackpot is that players keep their discarded cards. The purpose of keeping the discarded cards is to show proof that indeed he has a pair of Jacks, even when one these Jacks has been discarded. For example, a poker player gets four cards of the same suit and one of which is a Jack. The fifth card is also a Jack, but, obviously, of a different suit. During the draw phase, this particular poker player may discard the Jack of the different suit in favor of forming a flush. If a question arises about his ability to open the betting round, the person needs only to show the discarded jack.
